spam bots

Postby cooter » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:24 am

The spam bots seem to really be stepping it up lately. If you want my help, I can help you to set up the registration page to minimize their ability to register. Let me know.

Thanks for the offer. I tried switching to reCaptcha, but it appears that's been broken. So I've moved to Q&A, we'll see how that goes.

Yeah, that's the technique I tried first, didn't slow them down at all.

you need a logic question. one that has to be answered using text (and a human brain). such as: "What is fourteen minus ten?" have them answer using text (four), not a number (4). this works great at another forum I am a member at.

Hmm, I thought I'd tried that, but I guess I configured the Q&A captcha without ever actually turning it on. We'll see...

the spam you're seeing now is from bots that registered before your latest fix to the registration page. no one new has registered since you put that in place, so it may take a while to weed out the previously registered bots. I assume you're banning their IPs?
